Opportunities & Challenges for Climate Mitigation in the Irish Transport Sector
The National Economic and Social Council (NESC) hosted a forum to explore the Opportunities and Challenges for Climate Mitigation in the Irish Transport Sector, which was held on the 1st of December 2015.
The forum stimulated debate amongst relevant senior public and private sector decision makers and key stakeholders, with an emphasis on opportunities and potential benefits afforded by sustainable transport.
The programme for the day included a review of the status of climate mitigation in this sector and consisted of a series of dedicated panel discussions, each looked forward at solutions that fit well with existing policies in Ireland.
The four panel sessions included a wide range of perspectives and considered:
- Reflections on areas of current progress and how to maximise opportunities for further development (DTTAS / IBEC / TCD);
- Practical sustainable transport solutions, and the associated national economic, environmental and social benefits (Selection of case experiences from city and county councils);
- Low carbon solutions for both passenger vehicles and freight transport (UCD / SEAI / ESB E-Cars);
- Consideration of institutional and policy issues required to implement cross-cutting actions and innovative solutions (NESC / An Taisce )
