Welcome

Welcome to the National Economic and Social Council (NESC).

The National Economic and Social Council was established in 1973. Its main tasks are to analyse and report to the Irish Government on strategic issues relating to the efficient development of the economy and the achievement of social justice.

In addition to advising the Government, the Council provides a stable forum where the major economic and social interests in Irish society engage in shared observation of evidence on the state of Ireland's economy and society, deliberation based on independent analysis, and a problem-solving approach to meeting national challenges and implementing national priorities.

Over 100 reports have been published by the Council on areas such as general economic and social policy, industrial policy, housing, social service priorities, agriculture, rural development and emigration.

Since the mid-1980s, NESC contributed in a significant way to developing a strategic framework for the conduct of relations and negotiation of agreements between Government and social partners.
