NESC Publishes report on Ireland in the European Union

The National Economic and Social Council today (17-12-2010) published a report, Refinding Success in Europe: The Challenge for Irish Institutions and Policy. Earlier this year, the Council published The Euro: An Irish Perspective. Together, these reports constitute a NESC view of Ireland's experience and changing engagement with Europe.

NESC LAUNCHES NEW REPORT: ‘NEXT STEPS IN ADDRESSING IRELAND’S FIVE-PART CRISIS: COMBINING RETRENCHMENT WITH REFORM’

Dublin, Monday 12 October 2009—The National Economic & Social Council (NESC) today highlights the need for an integrated nationally-supported response that addresses all five parts of Ireland’s crisis: banking, fiscal, economic, social and reputational.

The report includes a review of policy responses and developments since the Council’s last report on the crisis in March 2009. Despite important steps, an integrated, nationally-supported and widely-understood response has yet to be achieved.

NESC PUBLISHES REPORT ON WELL-BEING

In its new report, Well-Being Matters: A Social Report for Ireland, the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) calls for a broader understanding of social progress. ‘Something more than GDP is required to measure social progress’ said NESC’s Director, Dr. Rory O’Donnell. ‘GDP can measure economic output but does not take adequate account of the value of education, our health, or the natural environment. Our social progress is linked to the capabilities of our people and that is where well-being matters’.

NESC CALLS FOR ‘INTEGRATED NATIONAL RESPONSE’ TO CRISIS

Dublin, Tuesday, 10th March, 2009—The National Economic & Social Council (NESC) today calls for an integrated national response to the current crisis. Such a response, the Council argues, must be widely understood, command support and, most importantly, engage the ability and energy of the Irish people.
