NESC is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability. We are in the process of improving the user experience for everyone and adhering to the required accessibility standards.
The EU Web Accessibility Directive mandates that public sector websites and mobile applications comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 AA (double A) level.
Accessible Content
Since our last statement (July 2025), we have now implemented changes to make the following elements accessible:
- Heading Structure: We have now implemented changes to headings to ensure semantic heading structure that will assist users of assistive technology (e.g. screen readers).
Content that we are currently working on
- Images: We are actively working on reviewing if our images require alt text descriptions or not, depending on if they are either informative or decorative images. Where appropriate, our aim is to reduce cognitive overload for screen reader users.
- PDF documents: We are also currently working making our PDF documents accessible, by developing an alternative HTML based format (webpage) that will work for all devices & assistive technology. As we work through our PDF documents, our aim is to provide a webpage link for each accessible version as it becomes available.
Non-Accessible Content
We are aware that the content listed below is not yet fully accessible:
- Links: For a small amount of links throughout the site, the purpose of each link cannot be determined from the link text alone.
- Skip-link: We hope to have this working soon to help people using assistive technology who may wish to skip past header content to access main content.
- Videos: Captions / subtitles, audio descriptions, and transcripts of prerecorded video content are not currently provided.
Preparation of this accessibility statement
This statement was updated in September 2025.
