Rescheduled Hybrid Launch Event | Shared Island: Shared Opportunity NESC Comprehensive Report
- 12 April 2022

- Types: Events
This rescheduled NESC Hybrid Event, in association with the Department of the Taoiseach, took place at the Conference Centre, Dublin Castle and online on the morning of Tuesday, 12th April 2022, 9.45am–13.00pm.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin T.D. spoke at this event to discuss the findings of a NESC report to Government on the Shared Island, and that ex RTE journalist Mr Tommie Gorman moderated the proceedings.
As part of the Government’s Shared Island Initiative the Department of the Taoiseach requested the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) to undertake research and to produce a comprehensive report on the Shared Island, to inform the development of the Shared Island Initiative as a whole of Government priority.
Speakers from across the island responded to the conclusions and recommendations in the report based on their own experiences, with a focus on future opportunities.
The focus of the event was to discuss the main findings in the report in relation to economic policy and infrastructure, social policy, climate and biodiversity, and well-being from a shared island perspective.
Extensive consultation and research informed the report. This involved in excess of 100 meetings with practitioners, policy makers, academics and experts from a diverse range of institutions across the whole island. It involved detailed work in the North-West, including four focus groups. A public consultation on Climate and Biodiversity took place. The work also drew upon a number of related webinars and the Shared Island Social Dialogues undertaken by the Department of the Taoiseach.
The event was of interest to policy makers, business, environmental, community and voluntary organisations, practitioners, local authorities, academics and interested individuals across the island.
The report and event is a culmination of work over the last year, where NESC published two Council Reports, six Secretariat Papers and one Background Paper on the Shared Island.
