On Wednesday, 4th September 2024 Kate Raworth gave a public lecture on Doughnut Economics following her award of an honorary doctorate in economic sciences by UCD. Doughnut economics provides an integrated framework for thinking about countries’ and cities’ performance in achieving adequate social foundation for their populations while staying within planetary boundaries. Doughnut economics also encapsulates 21st century economic thinking presenting a framework for new ways to think about the challenges facing our world and how to address them.
NESC Policy Analyst Gemma O’Reilly was one of the panellists contributing to discussion following the lecture, where she described how the doughnut economics concept and framework can inform policy analysis. She also discussed how insights from a range of disciplines beyond economics are crucial to achieving the ‘doughnut economy’ and how a methodical approach to systems thinking is necessary to address the complex challenges of today.
