News: NESC Attends EEAC’s 32nd Annual Adaptation and Resilience Conference in Brussels

On Monday 22nd April NESC Senior Policy Analyst Niamh Garvey travelled to Brussels, Belgium to partake in the European Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils (EEAC) Network’s Knowledge Exchange Day, as part of its 32nd Annual Conference on Adaptation and Resilience. The objective of the Knowledge Exchange Day is to focus specifically on the role of councils in advising policy makers and to exchange what new challenges we face in this era of climate adaptation.

Niamh spoke to the councils as part of the first workshop of the day: “How can we effectively integrate the just transition element into our policy advice?” Niamh’s presentation emphasised the recent developments in the area of Just Transition, as well as NESC’s own research and dialogue in this sphere. NESC has provided a number of advisory reports to the Irish government on Just Transition, with its first report on this topic published in 2019 in response to a request from Government to explore employment vulnerability arising from the climate and digital transitions. Niamh also highlighted our second report, published in 2023, which focused on transition in the agriculture and land use sector. Recently, NESC has engaged in a government taskforce that has considered the function and structure of a proposed Just Transition Commission in Ireland. Lastly, Niamh updated the conference on how the energy system transition is a current focus area of our work, including a just transition lens.
